The most famous Bill Shankly quote is: “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” In a remarkable career, Shankly won five Scotland caps and an FA Cup winners’ medal as a player with Preston North End. However, ‘Shanks’ will always be best remembered as a passionate and inspirational manager. Shankly managed Carlisle United, Grimsby Town, Workington and Huddersfield Town. In 1959, he was appointed manager of Liverpool. He led Liverpool from the English second division to win three English League Championships. He laid the foundations for what was a period of dominance for Liverpool in England and Europe during the 1970s, when the club won the UEFA Cup in 1073.
