George Kerr

(B.1937)
Judo
Inducted in 2003

George Kerr is one of only two people in the United Kingdom to have held the 10th Dan rank – the highest level in judo. A former British and European champion, he is also the only coach in Britain to have trained a double Olympic champion, the Austrian Peter Seisenbacher. Add to that the positions of Olympic referee and former chairman of British Judo and he is without doubt worthy of the nickname, ‘Mr Judo’. Whilst competing, Kerr won a European Championship gold medal in 1957, three silvers at the Europeans (1962, 1963 and 1967), two European bronze (1964 and 1966), and was British Open champion in 1966 and 1968.
