An open-side flanker who played for Scotland between 1986 and 1991, Finlay Calder will always be remembered for his rampaging display in the Grand Slam decider between Scotland and England in 1990. Scotland were unfancied despite enjoying home advantage, but, thanks partly to Calder's never-say-die attitude, the underdogs achieved an improbable and memorable 13-7 victory. In 1989, Calder was the first Scottish player to captain the British Lions since Michael Campbell-Lamerton in 1966, and the first winning Lions captain since Willie John McBride in 1974. The back row player won 34 Scotland caps, seven as captain.
